Buena Vista senior running back John Hill (Webster City, Iowa/Webster City) and senior linebacker Nick Plueger have been recognized for their work off of the field, as each has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District Football Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and released Thursday.
The duo is among a total of nine players selected from the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) with BVU one of two teams (Dubuque) to land more than one. It's the first time either has been recognized for such an honor in their respective careers.
Hill is a biology and Spanish major with a 3.81 GPA, while Plueger is a Media Studies major with a 3.50 GPA. The two will now advance onto the Capital One Academic All-America ballot where a first, second and third team will be selected later this month.
Michael Irvin (2004) is the last to earn academic all-american honors for the program.
This is the second year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2012-13 Division II and Division III Academic All-America® teams program.
