#12 Bethel Hands Beavers 56-7 Loss

The Buena Vista football team was back on the road on Saturday afternoon to face #12 Bethel University, and it was the Royals jumping out to a 35-0 halftime lead en route to the 56-7 victory.

Bethel scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter, using a 15-play, 75 yard drive to begin the game before returning an interception 40 yards for the score.  Quarterback Erik Peterson then rushed for a score and threw for two more during the second quarter to push the advantage to 35-0 at the break.

Peterson found the endzone with his legs again in the third for the first of two rushing scores for the Royals.  They then scored their final touchdown on special teams, blocking a punt and recovering in the endzone.

BVU avoided the shutout when quarterback Bobby Brown found Adam Cave from three yards out for the game's final score with just 19 seconds left.

BVU was held to only 35 yards rushing for the day and 151 overall.  The Royals, who got 202 yards passing from Peterson, tallied 371 yards of offense overall.

Brown completed 9-of-30 pass attempts for 116 yards and the one score, while being intercepted twice.  Cave hauled in a team-high three passes for 23 yards.  John Hill was the team's leading rusher with 36 yards on 14 carries.

Peterson completed 14-of-16 passes for Bethel with Jay Hilbrands hauling in three for 99 yards and two scores.  Brandon Marquardt rushed 17 times for 75 yards.

Defensively, Brady Randall and Nick Plueger led the charge with 14 total tackles with Tanner Collins right behind with 10 stops and one forced fumble.

The Beavers (0-3) will now have a week off before opening Iowa Conference play on Saturday, September 29 with a 1:00pm kick-off in Cedar Rapids against Coe College.
