Three former Buena Vista baseball players were tied to state championship winning baseball teams over the weekend, as the Iowa High School State Baseball Tournament wrapped up at Principal Park in Des Moines on Saturday, July 28.
BVU Athletic Hall of Famer Byron Peyton SL ‘81, who has more than 470 career victories, captured a state baseball championship on Saturday as the head coach for Dallas Center-Grimes, while Brock Yossi SL ‘12, served an assistant coach on that team. The top-seeded Mustangs (36-2) cruised to a 13-0 victory over sixth-seed Decorah in the Class 3-A contest, winning the school's first baseball championship.
Earlier on Saturday, Steve Westphal SL ‘77, who’s served as a volunteer assistant coach at Martensdale St. Mary’s for the last three years, was part of a championship winning team for the third straight season when the fourth-seeded Blue Devils (40-5) topped second-seeded Mason City-Newman, 1-0, in a Class 1-A contest. Westphal retired from coaching after winning a state title at Lenox High School in 2009, wrapping up a 30-year career and a record of 638-215.
Both Peyton and Westphal are also members of the IHSBCA Hall of Fame.
