The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) released its 2012 All-Conference baseball teams on Wednesday, and Buena Vista was tabbed with four all-conference selections and one honorable mention.
Senior relief pitcher James Stone (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) was the lone Beaver to land a spot on the First Team. He earns the honor after receiving Second Team accolades in each of the last two years. Stone closed out his collegiate campaign in convincing fashion, going 4-1 overall with five saves and an ERA of 1.37. In conference play, he was 4-0 with a pair of saves in eight appearances, finishing with a 1.17 ERA over 15.1 innings of work.
Seniors Michael Dirkx (Carroll, Iowa/Carroll) and Brock Yossi (Dallas Center, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes) were named to the league’s All-IIAC Second Team, as was junior Ryan Scheetz (Omaha, Neb./Millard North). Yossi is a two-time selection, while Dirkx and Scheetz earn the recognition for the first time.
Yossi started all 24 conference games at third base for the Beavers and hit .292 with a team-best 17 runs scored, while going 14-of-15 in stolen bases attempts. His 14 swipes were most in the league. He also tied for the team-lead with 12 walks and posted an on-base percentage of .414.
Dirkx wrapped up his career by going 3-2 overall this season with a 4.32 ERA in over 66 innings of work. During IIAC play, we went 2-2 in seven starts, including a pair of complete-game shutouts in 44 innings. League opponents hit only .196 against him, while he posted 36 strikeouts.
Scheetz finished with the fifth-best average during conference play (.370) among all other league hitters. He finished tied for the team lead with four doubles and led the way with his 12 RBI. Overall, he hit .352 with nine doubles, four home runs and a career-high 33 RBI. Defensively, he committed only five errors at first base in over 350 total chances.
Freshman Jesse Munsterman (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) was tabbed an honorable mention performer in his first collegiate season. He finished second on the team and eighth in the conference with a .357 average against league foes, including two doubles, a triple and six RBI. His .414 slugging percentage was also second-best on the team.
The four all-conference selections for the Beavers this season give them a total of 23 over the last four years. It also marks the fourth straight year that at least one BVU pitcher has landed a spot on the First Team.
Buena Vista finished the 2012 season at 24-19 overall (13-11) and placed second to Coe College at the Iowa Conference Baseball Tournament.
Luther College’s second baseman Chris Reynolds was voted the league’s Position Player of the Year, while Central College’s starting pitcher Joel Pulliam was named the Pitcher of the Year and head coach Adam Stevens was tabbed the Coach of the Year.
