Baseball Completes Series Sweep of Prairie Wolves

The Buena Vista baseball team played its final tune-up game before the start of Iowa Conference play next weekend by finishing off the three-game weekend sweep at Nebraska Wesleyan University on Sunday afternoon with a 13-7 victory.  The win is the fourth straight for the Beavers and the fifth in their last six outings.

As it did all series, the BVU offense wasted little time getting on the board in a big way.  Freshman Dillon Plath, who finished with three hits and four RBI, got the Beavers out in front first with a two-run triple to left center.  Sophomore Joe Paletta and junior Ryan Scheetz also drove home runs in the frame.

The Prairie Wolves then cut the deficit in half in the third with a pair of runs on three hits before the Beavers went on to break the game open with four runs on four hits in the fifth.  All four runs came with two outs.  Sophomore Dylan Colo plated the first with an RBI single through the right side before Plath drove in the final of his four runs with a single to center.  Nick Schlecht made it 8-2 with an RBi double.

NWU got one back in the bottom of the inning, but the Beavers attacked right back in the sixth with two more runs when sophomore Chad Sibigtroth, who finished 4-for-5 in the contest, doubled home two.

The Prairie Wolves tried to fight back, scoring four in the seventh to make it 10-7, but BVU added three insurance runs in the ninth.

Aside from Plath and Sibigtroth, who combined for seven of the team’s 15 hits, Scheetz, Colo and Neil Eddie all added two.

Junior Reggie Kock tallied his first win of the year, going the first six innings, allowing only three runs (two earned) on six hits, while striking out six and walking only one. Brennan Holm was charged with four runs before Cam Beatty, James Stone and Tyler Lefeber came on to work the final three innings, allowing just two hits and striking out two.

Buena Vista is now 7-6 overall and will remain on the road to open league play when it travels to Mt. Vernon, Iowa, next Friday, March 23, for the first game of a three-game weekend series against Cornell College.  Friday’s single nine-inning game is scheduled for 6:00pm
