The Buena Vista women’s basketball team hung tough in the early going while looking for the road upset of #8 Simpson College on Wednesday night, but the Storm used a key 26-11 run over the final part of the first half and would go on to hand the Beavers a 76-42 loss.
BVU held a 15-14 lead midway through the opening half before an 11-2 spurt from the Storm gave them a 25-17 lead at the 6:17 mark. Despite shooting under 30 percent from the field in the first half, a three-pointer from senior Brooke Wehle (Denison, Iowa/Denison-Schleswig) and a free-throw from junior Malarie Gilley (Grand Junction, Iowa/East Greene) got the Beavers within four at 27-23 with less than four minutes left in the half.
An 8-0 run pushed the Simpson lead into double-digits for the first time with only 2:43 remaining. A jumper with 25 ticks left sent the Storm (19-1, 9-0 IIAC) into the locker room with the largest lead to that point, 40-25.
Simpson, which shot just 39.4 percent from the field in the game, scored seven of the first nine points of the second half to extend its lead to 20 less than three minutes in and would lead by at least that margin for most of the half.
BVU was held to just 17 points in the second half and finished the contest shooting only 24 percent from the field.
Sophomore Becca Pennington (Mt. Ayr, Iowa/Mt. Ayr) led the way offensively with nine points for BVU, while also grabbing a seven rebounds and recording three steals. Freshman Lexi Fisher (Glenwood, Iowa/Glenwood) followed with seven points, as Wehle and junior Susan Kies (Fonda, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) each connected on two three-pointers to chip in with six points.
Senior Heather Hansman (Westside, Iowa/Ar-We-Va) hauled in a team-leading nine rebounds with Gilley close behind with eight.
Buena Vista sits at 8-12 overall (1-8 IIAC) and looks to bounce back on Saturday afternoon as the team remains on the road for a 2:00pm contest at Loras College.
