Late Rally Falls Short for Women's Basketball at Central

Jan. 21, 2013
Pella, Iowa

The Buena Vista women’s basketball team cut a 16-point second-half deficit down to five with four minutes to play, but it was Central (9-8, 2-4 IIAC) using a late surge to pull away from the Beavers, 74-61 on Monday night in an Iowa Conference match-up.

Freshman Lexi Fisher (Glenwood, Iowa/Glenwood) turned in a team-high 12 points with senior Brooke Wehle (Denison, Iowa/Denison-Schleswig) right behind with 11, as sophomore Becca Pennington (Mt. Ayr, Iowa/Mt. Ayr) and freshman Lacey Vokt (Audubon, Iowa/Audubon) added 10 each.  Pennington made a pair of three-pointers for the Beavers, who shot just 4-of-15 from downtown overall.

Senior Tara Lehner (LeMars, Iowa/LeMars) fell a point shy of her second career double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds.  As a team, BVU was out-rebounded 41-29.

Central led from the opening tip, using a run midway through the half which put the Dutch up double-digits at 23-13 with 10:32 remaining.  They maintained that lead, leading by as many as 15 in the period before taking a 41-32 lead into the locker room.

The lead quickly went back to 15 to start the second half and was pushed to 16 with 12:35 left in regulation.  BVU then rattled of six straight points to get back within 10 at the 8:16 mark, but couldn’t pull any closer until Pennington’s three-pointer and Fisher’s layup near the four-minute mark got the team to within five at 63-58.  From there, however, the Dutch sank 9-of-10 from the free-throw line to help close the game on an 11-3 run.

Buena Vista is now 7-10 overall on the year (0-6 IIAC) and will be back on the road for a 6:00pm tip-off at Coe College on Wednesday night.
