The Buena Vista volleyball picked up a convincing three-set shutout and a thrilling five-set triumph as part of its 2-2 record during the Augustana College (Ill.) Pumpkin Bash this past Friday and Saturday. The event was the final outings of the year for the Beavers.
The team got things rolling right from the start on Friday, upending Iowa Wesleyan by scores of 25-10, 25-11 and 25-15. Sophomore Kirsten Van Zuiden posted her second double-double of the year, chalking up 14 kills and a .684 hitting percentage in the match to help lead the Beavers, while also adding 10 digs. Junior Chelsea Clayton followed closely with 11 kills and a .500 percentage and also chipped in with five total blocks. As a team, BVU posted a season-best percentage of .393.
Sophomore Courtney Van Haaften dished out 38 assists to put her over the 600 mark for the year, while also adding three of the team's 13 ace serves. Sophomore Jordan Henningsen turned in a team-high five ace serves to go along with seven digs.
BVU looked to make it back-to-back wins when it faced the host school to end the day, but the team came up a little short, falling 25-23, 25-17 and 25-17. Van Zuiden and Clayton again led the way at the net with 11 and nine kills, respectively, with Van Zuiden also adding eight digs and four total blocks. Van Haaften dished out 27 more assists and five digs, while Henningsen tallied a team-leading 13 digs.
It was a thrilling start to the day on Saturday with the Beavers clawing all the way back from a 2-1 deficit to hang on and edge Concordia-Wisconsin 25-22, 19-25, 18-25, 25-11 and 15-13.
Van Zuiden finished with a career-high 23 kills on 61 attempts for a .271 percentage, pushing her over the 300-kill mark for the second straight year (301). Clayton was strong again as well, chipping in with 15 kills, as Abby Hinrichs added seven. Van Haaften was two off her career-high with 52 assists, marking the seventh time in her career she has gone past 50 in a single match. She also added nine digs and one block assist.
Henningsen led the team with 20 digs, as Jessica Stocker matched her career-high with 17 and senior Bailey Schafbuch added 12.
The team closed out the year later in the afternoon against 11th-ranked Wartburg College where it fell to the Knights, 25-13, 25-12 and 25-8.
Van Zuiden, who was later named to the All-Tournament Team, was in double-digits in kills for the fifth straight match, turning in 10, to go along with her eight digs. Clayton was close behind with eight, as the duo combined for 18 of the team's 19 kills in the match.
Van Haaften went over the 700 mark in assists for the year with 18, while Henningsen tallied a team-high nine digs.
The Beavers finish their season at 6-26 overall.
