The 2013 Iowa Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships are scheduled to officially begin on Thursday, May 9, with the heptathlon/decathlon events, and the Buena Vista track and field teams are heading into the championships looking to build off last year's success and post their highest overall finishes in recent years.
The two sides combined (women and men) head to the Loras College campus - site of this year's championships - with 27 individuals/events ranked in the top-10 on the IIAC Performance list. Of that group, nine are among the top-5. The top-3 finishes in each event will earn all-conference recognition.
Last year, BVU had a total of nine all-conference finishers. The women's team took sixth overall with the men coming in fifth. It was the first time since 2007, that each captured top-six placings.
Sophomore Seth Woodson captured the team's lone first-place finish in 2012 when he took gold in the 800 meter run. Both he and brother, Garrett, enter this year's race ranked seventh and eighth, respectively, but only a second out of second.
In the 100 meter dahs, Brock Loseke enters with the fastest time on the men's side (10.88), while Maggie Marker (12.31), Casey James (12.44) and Katie Larsen (12.67) each come in ranked in the top-eight on the women's side. Marker has also posted the sixth-fastest time in the 200 meter dash.
The teams will also look to chalk up additional points in the relays. The women's 4x100 brings in the second-fastest clocking so far this season (48.43), while the men are sixth.
Depth in the field events could prove to be a factor as well on both sides. On the women's side, Amber Riedy is currently third in the pole vault with Molly Hutchins eighth in both the shot put and hammer throw. Abby Hesnard and Erin Laursen are eighth and ninth, respectively in the javelin.
Bo Darrow and Collin Mann are second and third in the javelin with Matt Best currently ranked 10th.
The top-8 places in each event receive team points.
Aside from the multi-events on Thursday, the bulk of the championships will get underway on Friday afternoon at 1:00pm. The three-day event is scheduled to wrap up on Saturday.
