Buena Vista senior offensive lineman Michael Wiegmann (Dumont, Iowa/Aplington-Parkersburg) has been selected to play in the 36th Annual Aztec Bowl on Friday, December 14, in Monterrey, Mexico as well as the 17th annual Metrodome All American Bowl on Saturday, December 22.
Wiegmann, who was an All-Iowa Conference First Team selection this season and a Second Team honoree as a junior, has been the starting center for the Beavers the last four seasons. He capped off his BVU playing career by anchoring an offensive line which averaged more than 335 yards of total offense during IIAC play this season, including an average of 145 on the ground.
“To be a part of a team and represent the United States is unbelievable,” says Wiegmann. “I just never thought that I would ever get picked for something like this. “I’m really thankful for my coaches here at BV. They are the ones that got me ready for opportunities like this, and I could not have done it without them.”
He becomes the program’s first player since Cody Pierce in 2007 to be selected to play in the Aztec Bowl and the first-ever offensive lineman.
“He is an outstanding representative of BVU and the football program,” says BVU head coach Jay Anderson. “He worked extremely hard this past off-season, dropped about 30 pounds which allowed him to pull in our run game from the center position. He is a very good athlete that plays in the offensive line and this should be a great experience for him.”
The Aztec Bowl provides an opportunity to showcase the top NCAA DII, DIII and NAIA players from across the United States. The American Eagles team will face the Mexican National team at Call Volcano Stadium which is expected to see 30,000 fans in attendance. With but one exception, all of the games over the years have been played at locations in Mexico; the exception was the 1957 game played in San Antonio, Texas. In 2011 the All American Eagles defeated the Mexican College All Stars 28-12.
Kick-off between the two teams is scheduled for 7:05pm.
After returning to the states, Wiegmann will quickly prepare himself to take part in the Metrodome All American Bowl. It’s an event that features three games with players from NCAA DI-AA, DII, DIII and NAIA. Forty-two of the nation’s top players will make-up each team.
Wiegmann is scheduled to play in the 2:05pm contest which is made up of players from DIII and NAIA.
“I am just really thankful for the opportunities that I have received, and none of it would have been possible without my teammates and coaches and everyone that has supported me throughout my career here at BV,” he adds.” “They are the ones who helped become the player I am today by pushing me every day to become a better football player.”
