Buena Vista's Brandon Wessels has been recognized for his performance on the field this last week by being named the Iowa Conference Baseball Position Player of the Week.
Wessels, a freshman utility player, extended his hitting streak to nine games by recording a hit in each of Buena Vista's six games last week. He posted a .577 average with 15 hits in 26 at-bats, including three doubles, nine RBI and eight runs scored for a .692 slugging percentage. Wessels was also successful on his only steal attempt of the week and made only one error in 25 chances defensively. He had a career-high four RBI in the second game of a 4-game series against Wartburg (an 8-7 loss) and a career-high four hits in the finale, a 16-12 loss where the Beavers outslugged the Knights, 21-13. Wessels leads all IIAC players in doubles and ranks second in both batting average and hits after missing all of last season due to injury.
Wessels becomes the second Beaver to earn conference recognition this season. Junior pitcher Jon Ringblom was named Pitcher of the Week back on March 17.
Buena Vista is 10-10 overall and is scheduled to return to action on Friday afternoon, April 12 with the first two games of a four-game weekend series at the University of Dubuque beginning at 1:00pm.
