Women's Soccer Edged in Overtime by College of St. Mary

Sep. 25, 2012
Omaha, Neb.

Freshman Tori Carson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) turned in a goal and dished out an assist, and the Buena Vista women's soccer team set a new school record for goals in a season, but the team was edged in overtime, 3-2, at the College of St. Mary on Tuesday afternoon.

The Flames got on the board first with a goal just four minutes into the contest.  BVU then responded midway through the period to grab its first lead.  Carson led senior Kellyn Arnold (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) with a pass as Arnold drove down the left side to knock it through to even the score at 1-1 late in the 21st minute. That goal also gave the Beavers a new school record for goals scored in a season (47), breaking the previous mark set last season.

Junior Shelby Ripperger (Lee’s Summit, Mo./Lee’s Summit North) then found Carson on a corner kick, as Carson converted the header for her 13th goal of the year, giving the Beavers the one-goal advantage heading into the half.

CSM came out to start the second half just like it started the game and tied things up with a goal four minutes in with a header off of a corner kick.

That’s the way the game stood until the first overtime period when the Flames (4-7) drove the right side of the goal and scored the game-winner just more than two minutes in.

Arnold finished the contest with four shots, as Carson added three.  Each had two shots-on-goal.

CSM out-shot the Beavers overall, 22-11, including a 14-4 advantage in the first half.

Nicole Smith (Murrieta, Calif./Paloma Valley) made her fourth start of the year and chalked up 10 saves.

Buena Vista (8-2-1) looks to get back into the win column on Friday evening when it returns home to host Coe College (6-3-1, 0-1 IIAC) in an Iowa Conference match-up inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.  Game time is set for 5:00pm.
