The Buena Vista men’s tennis team got its spring season off to a strong start by capturing a pair of Iowa Conference road wins on Saturday, defeating both the University of Dubuque and Loras College by identical 5-4 scores. It marked the first time in 10 years that BVU has topped the Spartans.
The Beavers captured three singles matches and two of the three doubles matches to claim the narrow win over Dubuque. Adam Gustad (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South) and Kyle Shade (St. Joseph, Mo./Central) cruised to an 8-2 triumph at number one doubles, while Christian Price (Aplington, Iowa/Aplington-Parkersburg) and Dillon Nevius (Osceola, Iowa/Clark Community) teamed up to win 8-4.
Gustad and Shade then got BVU off to a solid start in singles play with each capturing straight-set victories. Jason Ehrhardt (Osceola, Iowa/Clarke Community) dropped a tough three-set match at number four singles, as did Price at number five. Nevius then came from behind to win a thrilling number six match, 4-6, 7-5, 10-6 and give BVU the win.
Against the Duhawks, BVU again captured a pair of doubles wins to get things started, including a convincing 8-0 decision by Ehrhardt and Cole Renken (Cherokee, Iowa/Washington) in the number two slot. Price and Nevius made it a sweep on the day with their 8-6 triumph, while Gustad and Shade came up just short, falling 9-7.
The Duhawks then picked up wins in each of the first two singles matches before BVU won each of the next three to secure the win. Ehrhardt played his second three-set singles match of the day and this time came out on the winning end, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
Buena Vista improves to 2-1 overall (2-0 IIAC) and has already matched last year’s conference win total. The team is back on the court next weekend when it travels to Cedar Rapids for matches against Carthage College (1:00pm) and Coe College (5:00pm) on Saturday before a 9:00am match on Sunday against Ripon College.
