With their efforts against Simpson College this past Saturday, Buena Vista junior linebacker Brady Randall (Storm Lake, Iowa/Alta) and sophomore return man Dylan Barrett (Harlan, Iowa/Harlan) have each been recognized by the Iowa Conference office. Randall has been named the IIAC Defensive Football Player of the Week with Barrett tabbed as the Special Teams Player of the Week.
Randall posted a game-high 15 total tackles, including one for a loss, coupled with 1.5 sacks and two pass break-ups. It was his fourth double-digit tackle game of the year. He was also a key part to the defensive unit which allowed a season-low 85 rushing yards against the Storm.
Barrett, also had a stellar day, returning four kick-offs for 102 yards, an average of 25.5 yards per return. His long return of 36 yards came on BVU's opening possession. In addition to his return duties, he also chalked up 102 more yards on the ground, including two scores. It was his 80-yard scamper late in the fourth quarter which pushed the Beaver lead up to eight and proved to be the game-clincher.
Both individuals are earning the respective honors for the first time in their careers. Randall is the second Beaver to earn defensive honors this season (Nick Plueger), while Barrett is the first to earn special team accolades since Mason Nielsen did so for the week of September 25 of last season.
The duo was an instrumental part in BVU's thrilling 29-27 victory over Simpson which pushed the team's current overall win streak to four games heading into Saturday's season finale at the University of Dubuque (4-5, 3-3 IIAC). The streak is its longest since winning four straight conference games to start the 2008 campaign. Buena Vista enters Saturday's contest at 4-5 overall (4-2 IIAC) and a win over the Spartans would assure them of at least a tie for second in the final IIAC standings.
