The Buena Vista wrestling team trailed just 9-7 after four matches against top-ranked Wartburg College (12-1, 2-0 IIAC) on Thursday night, but the Knights went on to take the final six bouts and win the dual, 32-7.
Senior Joe Klinkel (Ames, Iowa/Ames) put the Beavers in front 4-0 after he cruised to a strong 16-8 major decision over Kevin Hein in their 197-pound match-up. After Wartburg got a pin from sixth-ranked Ryan Clark at heavyweight, a pair of ranked wrestlers took the mat at 125 pounds.
Sixth-ranked Austin Mogg (El Reno, Okla./El Reno) looked to pull off the upset for BVU against second-ranked Kenny Anderson in the third match of the night. Mogg trailed just 2-0 after the second period, but Anderson then posted an escape and takedown in the final period to take a 5-0 decision.
Senior Mike Berardesco (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) pulled the Beavers back within two after recording his 11th win of the year; a 4-1 decision over Braxton Chiccelly.
The Knights then won a pair of decisions at 141 and 149, respectively to extend the lead to 15-7 before a pin and technical fall made it 26-7.
Casey Paprocki (Omaha, Neb./Westside) trailed 2-0 after the first period at 174 pounds and just 4-1 after the second before falling to Ben Scott, 5-1. Fifth-ranked Brian Broll (Chaska, Minn./Waconia) lost for only the second time this season, and the first at 184 pounds, when he was edged in the dual’s final match, 5-3, by Sam Upah.
Wartburg, which ran its Iowa Conference win streak to 153 matches, improves to 12-1 overall this season (2-0 IIAC). The Beavers now sit at 3-4 overall (0-2 IIAC) and will now compete again this Saturday when they take part in the Cornell College Matman Invitational. Wrestling in Mt. Vernon is slated to start at 9:00am.
