The Buena Vista wrestling team got its 2012-13 season off on a strong note Saturday with five top-five places during the Kaye Young Open, hosted by North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC).
Sophomore Seth Shatto (Estherville, Iowa/ELC) brought home the best finish for the Beavers, placing second at 157 pounds. He picked up a 6-3 decision and an 11-3 major decision before tallying his first pin of the year to earn a spot in the finals before falling to Colby Carson of Ellsworth.
Freshman 133-pounder Cameron Mennenoh won each of his first two matches without allowing a single point before falling 11-3 in the semifinals. He did, however, bounce back in his consolation match for a 14-3 win over Khadeem Stanton, who was an unattached wrestler from Ellsworth, to place third.
Sophomore Branden Schultz took fourth for the Beavers at 125 pounds.
Senior Brian Broll (Chaska, Minn./Waconia) was one of three Beavers to place fifth on the day. He jumped out of the game with a quick pin to begin the day before being edged, 11-9. He then bounced back with a second period pin, followed by a commanding 10-2 major decision. He's now just 10 wins shy of 100 in his career.
Jared Bronough also captured a fifth-place finish at 197 pounds after dropping his first match of the day. He would bounce back on the consolation side with a pair of narrow one-point decisions.
Buena Vista will return to action next Saturday when it takes part in the Luther College Open in Decorah.
