
Junior Brooke Wehle (Denison, Iowa/Denison-Schleswig) converted a layup attempt with 1.7 seconds left to help lift the Buena Vista women’s basketball team to a thrilling 64-63 home victory over Coe College (15-7, 9-4 IIAC) on Saturday night on Alumni Weekend inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
The Kohawks, who trailed 61-57 with over four minutes to play in regulation, fought back to take a 63-62 lead with just over 10 seconds left. After getting the ball back across halfcourt, BVU called a pair of timeouts and Wehle drove the lane for her eventual game-winning layup.
The bucket was only the second field goal for Wehle in the contest, as she finished with six points, on 2-of-9 shooting, while also chiming in with five assists. Senior Jessica Christensen (Turin, Iowa/West Monona) and Laura Hilby (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) each knocked down four three-point buckets and tallied 15 points apiece. Christensen also grabbed nine rebounds and tallied two steals. Sophomore Susan Kies (Fonda, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) buried a pair of three-pointers for BVU and finished with 11 points off the bench.
The Beavers used the long range shot to their advantage on the night, as 11 of the team’s 22 field goals came from beyond the arc. Seven of those makes came in the first half as the team went on to build a 32-22 halftime cushion.
After shooting only 21 percent from the floor in the first half, Coe fought back thanks in part to a 51 percent effort in the second half. BVU led by as many as 13 early in the period and by 11 with five minutes gone by.
The Beavers continued to hang onto the advantage until the Kohawks took their first lead (55-54) since the 6-minute mark of the first half. A 7-2 spurt by BVU gave the team the four-point lead before the dramatic ending.
BVU outrebounded Coe, 47-41 and held Kayla Waskow, the league’s leading scorer to only seven points, on just 2-of-13 shooting.
Megan Hayes and Lindsey Ware each scored 13 points to help lead Coe.
Buena Vista improves to 10-11 on the year (5-7 IIAC) and will now travel to Simpson College (16-5, 9-3 IIAC) on Wednesday night, February 8, for a 6:00pm contest.
