The Buena Vista volleyball team was back out on its home court Tuesday night to host #15 Wartburg College, and the Beavers put up a nice fight, but the upset bid came up short, as the Knights prevailed in three sets, 25-21, 25-22, 25-11.
BVU came out strong in the opening set, taking the early 11-8 lead. The Knights, however, fought back to even things up at 14-14, and the set continued to go back-and-forth. The Beavers again led 20-19, but Wartburg rattled off four straight points to take a 23-20 lead en route to the four-point win.
Wartburg stormed out to the early 13-5 lead to start the second set, but the Beavers would not let up, clawing back to within 20-19 and force the Knights to take a timeout. It remained tight with BVU trailing only 22-20, but the Knights then recorded consecutive ace serves for a 24-20 advantage. Following two straight points by BVU, the Knights again called timeout, but came out of it to record the set point.
After tallying 11 kills in each of the first two sets, the Beavers just couldn’t get enough of a rally going in the third set, finishing with only four kills. Wartburg built a 9-1 lead and never looked back.
Chelsea Clayton and Kirsten Van Zuiden each finished with eight kills and just two errors to help lead the Beavers offensively, while Jena Peters was close behind with six kills. As a team, BVU finished with only seven hitting errors in the match. Courtney Van Haaften dished out 15 assists and was one of four players with two ace serves.
Defensively, Jordan Henningsen posted 10 digs with Clayton recording a team-leading two block assists.
Britlyn and Ramey Sieck each finished with nine kills to help lead Wartburg College (17-3, 4-0 IIAC).
Buena Vista is now 4-15 overall (0-4 IIAC) and returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it competes at the Carleton College Triangular. It will face UW-Superior at 1:00pm before playing Carleton College at 3:00pm.
