Brown's Pinch-Hit Single Helps Lift Beavers to DH Split with Kohawks

Mar. 31, 2012
Storm Lake, Iowa

Freshman Alex Brown (Harlan, Iowa/Harlan) came on as a pinch hitter and delivered in a big way, as his walk-off single to right field in the seventh inning of game one helped send the Buena Vista baseball team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Coe College.  The Kohawks then came back with four first-inning runs in game two en route to a 6-3 win.

It was just the eighth at-bat of the season for Brown, and the first walk-off of his career.  Junior Neil Eddie (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) led off the inning with a single to right center before sophomore Dylan Colo (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) came on as a pinch runner.  Following a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jesse Munsterman (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter), Brown came through and registered his third RBI of the year.

The game was scoreless until each team traded runs in the sixth.  After Coe got an RBI single in the top half to break the 0-0 tie, sophomore Weston Foxx (Elk Horn, Neb./Elkhorn) then pulled BVU back even with his RBI single in the bottom half.

Eddie finished with two of the six base hits for the Beavers in the game, as Colo and Nick Schlecht (Omaha, Neb./Skutt) each scored.

Senior Michael Dirkx (Carroll, Iowa/Carroll) got the start and earned a no-decision after pitching 6.1 effective innings, allowing just one run on four hits, while walking two and striking out five.  Fellow senior James Stone came on following a one-out single in the seventh and worked around an error and a walk by picking up a strikeout to strand the bases loaded and pick up his first win of the year.

The Kohawks then plated four runs in the first-inning of game two for a 4-0 lead.  The Beavers got on the board in the third with an unearned run after two were out.  The team then cut the deficit in half with another run in the fourth.  Back-to-back walks with two outs helped set up Ryan Scheetz’s RBI single.

Coe then plated two insurance runs in the fifth to make it 6-2 before Foxx singled in a run in the sixth for the game’s final score.

Munsterman led the way with three hits for BVU, while Scheetz added two.  Foxx, along with Brown and Dillon Plath (Omaha, Neb./Burke), scored one run, while the team drew nine walks.

Junior Reggie Kock (Breda, Iowa/Ar-We-Va) was charged with four runs over 2.1 innings of work and suffered the loss.

Buena Vista is now 10-10 overall (2-4 IIAC) and will return to action again next weekend when it will travel to Luther College for a three-game weekend series.  Friday’s series opener is scheduled to begin at 3:00pm.
