Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Coe College scored a pair of runs in both the second and third innings on Saturday afternoon, and that proved to be enough as the Kohawks edge the Buena Vista baseball team in the Iowa Conference Tournament Championship game, 4-1.

Sophomore Joe Paletta (Omaha, Neb./Millard South) doubled home fellow sophomore Nick Schlecht (Omaha, Neb./Skutt) in the fourth inning for BVU’s only run.  Paletta finished the tournament 12-for-24 with three doubles, seven RBI and four runs scored.

Dillon Plath (Omaha, Neb./Burke) and Ryan Titman (Boone, Iowa/Boone) each posted two hits in the game for the Beavers, who ended with six overall.

Sophomore Andrew Marshall (Sheldon, Iowa/Sheldon) made his first career start on the mound for the Beavers and pitched four-plus innings, while being charged with all four runs (two earned) on six hits.  Junior Griffen Hatten (Bancroft, Iowa/North Sentral Kossuth) came on in relief after the lead-off hitter reached to start the fifth and worked the next 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out two and walking two.  Senior James Stone (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) made his final appearance in a Beaver uniform and worked the final 1.2 innings, allowing only a bunt single in the ninth, while striking out two.

Buena Vista finishes its season at 24-19 overall.  Aside from Stone, the game also marks the final one in the careers of seniors Brock Yossi (Dallas Center, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes) and Michael Dirkx (Carroll, Iowa/Carroll), as well as junior Kyle Hibbing (Webster City, Iowa/Webster City).
