Women's Basketball Handed 59-43 Loss at Wartburg

Jan. 25, 2012
Waverly, Iowa

Senior Laura Hilby (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) turned in a game-high 19 points, including 11 at the free-throw line, but the Buena Vista women’s basketball team wasn’t able to overcome a cold shooting night and 25 turnovers, as the Beavers fell on the road to Wartburg College on Wednesday night, 59-43.

Hilby finished the game shooting 4-of-9 shooting from the field and 11-of-13 at the free-throw line.  No other Beaver scored more than five points, as the team shot only 25.9 percent from the field, despite making 13-of-17 free-throw attempts.  Amanda Roder (Remsen, Iowa/St. Mary’s) hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds, defensively, while Jessica Christensen (Turin, Iowa/West Monona) was close behind with 10.

The Knights built an eight point lead at 19-11 with under seven minutes to go in the first half before six straight points from the Beavers, including five from Hilby, brought the team back within two with less than five minutes to go.

From there, Wartburg scored nine of the final 10 points of the half to take a 28-18 lead into intermission.  It then pushed the advantage to 16 eight minutes into the second half and the Beavers were unable to get any closer than 12 from there.

Wartburg only shot 33 percent from the field in the contest, and made only 16-of-24 at the free-throw line, but did make 7-of-17 attempts from long range.

Terri Dirks led three players in double figures for the Knights with 15 points.

Buena Vista is now 8-10 on the year (3-6 IIAC) and will be back inside of Siebens Fieldhouse to play host to Central College (5-14, 0-10 IIAC) on Saturday night at 6:00pm.
