Buena Vista head women's basketball coach Janet Berry recently gave a presentation during the annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association's national convention, which took place from April 5-9 in New Orleans, La.
Berry presented "Strengthen your Team by Empowering your Assistant Coach."
She spoke to the crowd and shared how she wants to see her side-kicks become the one who's in charge of a team at some point down the road.
"When I hire an assistant coach, I want them to become a head coach someday," says Berry. "I am willing to help them any way I can to reach that goal."
Berry had in attendance at the conference her current assistant, Dana Lehner, and two former assistants (Emily Cline and Amy Sander), both who left her bench directly to become head coaches.
Cline is currently head coach at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., while Sander is the top assistant Minnesota State-Mankato. Prior to that, she had served as head coach at Nebraska Wesleyan University.
"I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to coach with Janet," says Cline. "She has been a mentor to me and continues to be a mentor to me now."
"Janet taught me a lot, especially about relationships and how good relationships are the cornerstone of a successful coach and a successful program," she adds. "She really helped develop me as a person and as a coach. Janet is a great coach and an even better person who I was fortunate enough to get to coach with."
Others that Berry has mentored who have gone on in previous years to become head coaches include: Carrie Crawford (Wentworth Institute of Technology) and Nicole Kotrba (Cornell College).
