Des Moines/Indianola, Iowa

The Buena Vista track and field teams were in action on Friday at both the Drake Relays in Des Moines and the Kip Janvrin Open, hosted by Simpson College.

The Beavers had five relay teams competing inside of Drake Stadium, beginning with the 4x100 meter relay teams.  The men's team took eighth in their heat and finished 22nd overall with a time of 43.05, while the women's team was disqualified.

The 4x200 teams also took part, and the women's group of freshmen Casey James, Maggie Marker, Laura Eberly and senior Amber Woodford took sixth in its heat and 11th overall among the 20 teams with a time of 1:43.20.  The men's team of Peter Winterton, Tyler Case, Ryan Eberly and Stefan Petersen took second in its heat and ninth overall among the 17 teams which finished, crossing the line in a time of 1:29.26.

The women's 4x400 team took seventh in its heat and was 23rd overall with its fastest clocking of the year at 4:00.25.

The Beavers also had some top-5 finishers at the Kip Janvrin Open inside of Buxton Stadium on the Simpson College campus.

Rachel Burnette was third for the women in the 400 meter hurdles with a season best time of 66.38 (career best).  The 4x400 meter relay team of Abby Hesnard, Casey James, Laura Eberly, and Holly Nuetzman took third in a time of 4:12.94.  Amber Riedy tied for first in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.24 meters.  She and Erin Laursen later took third and fourth, respectively in the javelin.  Riedy finished with a toss of 91'09", while Laursen threw 90'03".

Over on the men's side, Seth Woodson, Ryan Eberly and Brian Patterson placed sixth thru eighth, respectively, for the Beavers.  Woodson's time of 50.56 was his fastest this season.  Andrew Smith took third overall in the 400 meter hurdles in his fastest time of 55.31.  He was also less than a second off of the winning time of 54.00.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Christian Cottingham, Tyler Case, Peter Winterton, and Stefan Petersen crossed the finish line in second with a time of 42.95, which is only 0.20 seconds off the fastest mark for the Beavers this season.  It was also just 0.15 seconds behind Briar Cliff for the winning time.

Nolan Sampson matched his season-best in the high jump and took third, only 0.05 meters off the winning jump.

DJ Smith and Branden Schultz each reached 3.50 meters in the pole vault.  It was the best mark for either individual this season.  Mann later launched his best throw this year in the javelin, placing third overall with a toss of 48.94.  He was also the top IIAC finisher in the 17-man field.

BVU will now host the Beaver Relays next Saturday before kicking-off the Iowa Conference Championships the following week.
