The Buena Vista track and field teams were back in action on Saturday by hosting the annual Dennis Young Classic inside of the Lamberti Recreation Center.

Bridgett Hasche turned in a solid effort in the weight throw to begin the day, capturing a third-place finish with a toss of 12.38 meters.  Erin Laursen was eighth with a career-best heave of 11.03 meters.  Haley Henrichs took third in the shot put with a toss of 9.55 meters.  Amber Reidy turned in a season-best performance in the pole vault, going 3.13 meters and placing seventh.

On the women’s side, the 4x200 meter relay team of Casey James, Laura Eberly, Trisha Nowatzke and Maggie Marker finished second in a time of 1:49.78.  Rachel Burnette captured a fifth-place finish in the 55 meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 9.42 seconds, as Casey James was fifth in the 55 meter dash (7.64).

In the 600 meter run, Paige Miller improved her time from last week’s Wayne State Open by 11 seconds, as Holly Neutzman shaved eight seconds off and Abby Hesnard was six seconds faster.  Neutzman was then fifth in the 1000 meter run with a time of 3:33.49.

The day closed with the 4x400 meter relay team taking eighth with its second-best time of the year.

Over on the men’s side, Joey Candelarie took fifth in the weight throw with a season-best throw of 7.71 meters.  Stefan Petersen turned in a season-best effort in the long jump, going 6.63 meters.  Beaver alum, Eric Bertelsen, a national champion in the event, won Saturday’s meet with a leap of 7.32 meters.

The 4x200 meter relay ‘A’ team also took second, while the ‘B’ team was right behind in third.  Brian Christensen and Dan Pearson crossed the finish line in fifth and sixth place, respectively during the mile run.  Pearson’s time of 5:00.75 seconds was three seconds faster than any of his finishes a season ago.

Doug Bohaty and Reid Zimmerman placed fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 55 meter hurdles.  Meanwhile, Peter Winterton took third in the 55 meter dash, finishing with a time of 6.63 seconds and only .07 seconds behind the winner.

Andrew Smith was eighth in the 600 meter run in a time of 1:29.59.  It was the first time he ran the event this year and his time was two seconds faster than his best clocking of a season ago.

BVU closed out its solid day with a third-place showing in the 4x400 meter relays, crossing the finish line in 3:28.73, just four seconds back of second and seven seconds behind the winners.  The time is also the fastest for the team in three tries this season.

Both teams return to the track again next Saturday, February 4, when they take part in the Dordt College Invite, beginning at 10:00am.
