
The Buena Vista volleyball team won both of its matches on Saturday and finished with three wins in four matches overall, as it wrapped up play during the Knox College Invite.
It began play on Friday against Monmouth College and after surrendering a 2-0 lead, hung tough in the decisive fifth set to hang on and top the Fighting Scots (8-5). Sophomore Kirsten Van Zuiden tallied a team-high 12 kills with junior Chelsea Clayton right behind with 10. Jena Peters just missed doubles figures with nine kills, to go along with four block assists. Courtney Van Haaften distributed the ball with 25 assists, to go along with two ace serves.
Jordan Henningsen chalked up 17 digs, defensively, to go along with a team-high three ace serves. Van Zuiden matched Peters with four block assists, while Chelsea Gubbels posted a team-leading five.
In its final match on Friday, the Beavers fell in three sets to William Penn University (14-6). After falling 25-15 in the opening set, BVU kept things close in the final two, losing both by identical 25-23 scores.
Van Zuiden and Clayton each turned in seven kills in the match, as Abby Hinrichs followed with six. Van Haaften dished out 16 assists and was one of four players with five digs. Henningsen again posted a team-leading 11 digs, while adding two more ace serves.
BVU bounced back to start the day on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Lincoln Christian. Stats from that match are not currently available.
The Beavers then wrapped up the Invite with a convincing 3-0 triumph over the host school. Clayton posted a team-high 10 kills in the match, to go along with three block solos. Van Zuiden and Hinrichs followed with seven kills and Van Haaften added 20 assists. Henningsen tallied 13 digs with Gubbels adding 11.
Buena Vista improves its overall record this season to 4-12. It will look to make it four wins in five matches when it returns to Iowa Conference play on Wednesday night with a road match at Coe College beginning at 7:30pm.
