New field lights have been installed at J. Leslie Rollins Stadium, providing the capability to hold evening events and practices for the Beaver football, soccer and track teams and student intramural activities. BVU will also be able to host evening high school athletics events, including district competitions, which provides another opportunity to showcase the athletics facility and campus to visiting high school students.
The lighting project includes four 100-foot poles with lights that can provide 75 foot-candles of illumination, enough for televising evening events. The lighting output is monitored by the equipment manufacturer, Musco Lighting, from its headquarters in Oskaloosa. The lights can be turned on and off manually and by computer. New visitor bleachers will be installed by late summer. Fundraising for additional enhancements to the stadium continue.
“I believe that our campus is one of the best in the Iowa Conference,” says Christyn Abaray, director of athletics. “With Peterson Field, the artificial turf playing surface that was installed in 2011, the addition of the new lighting gives us one of the best athletics facilities in the Iowa Conference. This is an exciting time for us at BVU. Watching BVU athletics, while simultaneously enjoying the spectacular view of Storm Lake from J. Leslie Rollins Stadium, is a wonderful way to spend a day or night. We are eagerly awaiting the start of this year’s athletics season and the many more to follow.”
