One big inning in each game on Tuesday helped lead visiting Simpson College to a pair of Iowa Conference victories over the Beaver softball team by scores of 7-3 and 6-0.
BVU broke a scoreless tie in the opener by getting a pair of runs in the third inning. After Stephanie Hayden and Brooke Berkey reached on bunt singles to lead off the inning, Jessy Bibler advanced them to second and third respectively with a sacrifice bunt of her own. The Beavers then got the first run on a passed pall before Jessica Stocker drove in Berkey later in the at-bat with an RBI single.
The lead, however, was short-lived, as the Storm came right back with seven runs in the fourth, while taking advantage of three errors, defensively, by BVU.
A Simpson error in the bottom half kept the inning alive and BVU was able to get one of those runs back, but that would prove to be all the scoring by either team.
BVU out-hit the Storm, 8-5, in the contest, and got two hits from Britney Kubik.
Jenna Falline went the distance and allowed just two earned runs, while suffering the loss.
In game two, it was a four-run second inning by the Storm that helped them build the early 5-0 lead. They then added the final run in the seventh.
BVU was held to just two hits in the contest.
Falline also got the start in the game and pitched the first two innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits. Faith Schmidt came on in relief and worked the five frames, allowing just the one run on six hits, while striking out three.
Buena Vista is now 11-17 overall (2-8 IIAC) and will be back on the road this Saturday when it travels to the University of Dubuque for an IIAC twinbill beginning at 2:00pm.
