After falling behind 9-1 after one inning, the Buena Vista baseball team battled back to within 11-8 in its half of the fifth, but the Wash U then scored four runs of its own in the bottom half and went on to top BVU, 21-9.
On what turned out to be a cold and very blustery day for baseball, BVU took a 1-0 lead in the first when lead-off man Ryan Titman walked and then stole second before coming around to score on batter later on a Brock Yossi RBI single to center.
Wash U, however, then stormed back with nine runs in its half, on eight hits,
The two teams then traded runs in the second before the Bears pushed the margin to 11-2 with another run in the third.
The Beavers tried to manage a comeback with six runs in the fifth on four hits. Chad Sibigtroth got the scoring started with a two-run single before Neil Eddie plated another with a single of his own. Weston Foxx later doubled home to more runs before scoring the final run of the frame on a wild pitch.
Just like it did in the first two innings, Wash U had another answer, this time plating four runs to extend its lead to 15-8 after five innings. It then put the game away with five more runs in the sixth to go along with the game's final run in the seventh.
After BVU scored one in the eighth to make it 21-9, the game was then called in the bottom half because of darkness.
Foxx led the charge at the plate for the Beavers with three hits, as Yossi, Eddie and junior Ryan Scheetz all followed with two. As a team, BVU finished with 10 hits, but couldn't overcome eight errors, defensively.
Junior Reggie Kock suffered the loss for the Beavers, as he was charged with nine runs (six earned) on eight hits in 0.2 innings. Griffin Hatten then gave the team 3.2 innings of work, allowing only two earned runs on five hits, while striking out three. Ian Grigsby allowed just one earned run in his 2.2 innings of relief, while striking out four. Kelsen Ganeku pitched to two batters in the eighth before the game was called and struck out one.
Buena Vista is now 1-2 overall and will play a pair of games on Saturday, beginning with a 9:00am contest with #14 St. Scholastica, followed by a 3:00pm contest against Wash U.
