The Buena Vista track and field teams were back in action on Friday evening to take part in the opening day of the 48th annual Sioux City Relays held inside of Olsen Stadium.
Highlighting the night for BVU, was the women's 4x100 meter relay which qualified two teams into Saturday's finals. The "A" team of Casey James, Maggie Marker, Amber Woodford, Laura Eberly, finished fourth in Friday's prelims with a time of 48.89, while the "B" team of Andrea Boyd, Abby Hesnard, Rachel Burnette, Trisha Nowatzke took eighth in 50.71.
The same four of the 4x100 "A" team then teamed up in the 4x200 meter relay to win the prelims in a school record time of 1:43.60. The team topped Division I South Dakota by one second.
On the men's side, BVU also qualified a pair of teams to Saturday's final in the 4x200 meter relay. The "A" team of Peter Winterton, Tyler Case, Ryan Eberly and Stefan Petersen took second in the prelims in a time of 1:28.82, finishing .53 seconds behind Sioux Falls. The Beaver "B" team of Christian Cottingham, Seth Woodson, Colin Mann, Brian Patterson was fourth in 1:30.28.
The 4x100 meter relay "A" team finished third in the prelims in 43.02, less than a second behind Sioux Falls, who qualifies with the fastest time.
Brian Patterson also took sixth in the 400 meter dash in a time of 50.62, with Seth Woodson crossing in ninth (50.73). Andrew Smith was fourth in the 400 hurdles in 55.83.
Action on Saturday is scheduled to begin at 8:00am.
