The Buena Vista baseball team jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before Coe College came back with a seven-run fourth inning on Friday night and hung on for an 8-6 victory over the Beavers in the opener of the three-game weekend set.
BVU took advantage of some sloppy defense by the Kohawks in the early going, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the first. Sophomore Nick Schlecht singled with one out and then was safe at second after the second baseman dropped a ball thrown to him from third base. Joe Paletta then reached on a throwing error by the third baseman which scored Schlect from second and advanced Scheetz to third. Sophomore Weston Foxx then made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Beavers then tacked on two more runs in the third to push the lead to 4-0. Scheetz singled with one out and then moved up to second on a wild pitch. After Paletta fouled out, Paletta then moved up to third on a throwing error by the pitcher and then scored on a throwing error by the centerfielder trying to throw him out at third. Foxx later singled and moved to second on a passed ball before scoring on senior Brock Yossi’s RBI single.
Coe College then loaded the bases with no one out in the fourth and scored its first two runs when a throw home from Yossi on a ground ball was high and went to the back stop. After the Kohawks had a runner thrown out at the plate, they then got an RBI single and plated another on a fielder’s choice before a three-run home gave them a 7-4 lead.
BVU got one run back in the bottom half when a line drive was dropped by the shortstop to score freshman Jess Munsterman from third. The Beavers then made it 7-6 in the eighth when Munsterman tripled down the right field line to score Yossi, who had walked to lead off the frame.
The Kohawks (10-5, 3-1 IIAC) got an insurance run back in the top of the ninth before the Beavers tried to mount a comeback in the bottom half. The team had runners at the corners with no one out, but Paletta’s liner to third was caught and then doubled up the runner.
Scheetz finished 3-for-5 at the dis, including his team-leading seventh double of the year, to go along with two runs scored. Munsterman also tallied three hits, as BVU posted 10 overall.
Sophomore Jon Ringblom suffered the loss, despite allowing only two earned runs. He pitched the first 5.2 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits and striking out three. Cam Beatty then came on and walked one batter before freshman Ian Grigsby closed things out, allowing just one unearned run on three hits, while striking out five.
Buena Vista is now 9-9 overall (1-3 IIAC) and will look to win the series with a doubleheader sweep tomorrow afternoon. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00pm.
