Junior Wes Nordquist goes over 1,000 career points on Saturday.

Men's Basketball Edged in Overtime by Kohawks

Feb. 4, 2012
Storm Lake, Iowa

Senior Jeff Janssen (Fairmont, Minn./Fairmont) buried a three-pointer with just under five seconds to go to force overtime, but it was Coe College (15-7, 9-4 IIAC) converting all six of its free-throw attempts down the stretch in overtime to hold off the Beavers, 77-74, on Saturday night inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.

The Beavers trailed by seven at half, but came out of the gate to start the second half on an 11-2 run to take a 37-35 lead on freshman Cole Darrow’s (Glenwood, Iowa/Glenwood) bucket five minutes in.  Neither team was able to build any larger than three the rest of the way, and after Coe extended its lead to three with a pair of free-throws, Janssen buried a three in front of the BVU bench to square things up at 65-65.

Coe nearly won the game in regulation, but its half court shot rimmed out to force overtime.

The Kohawks built a 71-67 lead with 3:29 to play in the extra frame before senior Michael Elming (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) got the Beavers back within a point with a three-pointer with just over a minute to play.  Coe then went back up by three with 15 seconds left, and made two free-throws with under 10 seconds to go to keep it at that same margin, as the three-point attempt by BVU at the buzzer came up short.

Junior Wes Nordquist (Adel, Iowa/ADM) had a monumental night for BVU, scoring a game-high 27 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while also surpassing the 1,000 career point mark.  He becomes only the 10th player in program history to have scored at least 1,000 career points and grab at least 500 career rebounds.  Elming and Doug Bissen (Earling, Iowa/Harlan) each followed with 11 points, as Bissen also grabbed nine rebounds.

The Beavers finished the game shooting nearly 47 percent from the field, despite going just 4-of-15 from downtown.  They also held a slim rebounding edge at 36-35.

David Mataloni scored 19 points to help lead Coe.

The Beavers now stand at 12-9 overall (8-4 IIAC) and will go back on the road this Wednesday night when they travel to Simpson College (9-11, 6-6 IIAC) for an 8:00pm tip-off.
