Softball Wins a Pair at St. Olaf on Sunday Afternoon

Apr. 1, 2012
Northfield, Minn.

The Buena Vista softball team was back in action for the second time in as many days on Sunday afternoon, and the Beavers picked up right where they left off on Saturday, by taking a pair of non-conference games at St. Olaf College by scores of 7-2 and 10-5.

BVU scored three runs in the first inning of game one and two more in the second for an early 5-0 lead.  The two teams then traded a pair of runs in the seventh.

Senior Chancey Wilcke, who belted the walk-off grandslam during Saturday’s game-two win over the University of Dubuque, gave the Beavers the 3-0 lead in the first with a three-run shot.  Brooke Berkey then drove in a run with a bunt single in the second, while a second run scored on the play when the St. Olaf pitcher threw wild.

Jordon Pilcher reached on an error with out in the sixth and then stole second.  She later moved to third on a groundout and then scored on another St. Olaf error.  Wilcke, who finished 3-for-3 at the plate, plated the game’s final run with a single, scoring Berkey.

Wilcke was equally as effective on the mound, picking up her seventh win of the year.  She allowed only one unearned run on five hits, while striking out two and walking none.  Sixteen of the 21 outs were made on groundouts.

It was another quick start for the Beavers in the nightcap, posting seven runs in the first inning, while adding three more in the third and one more in the sixth.

Berkey, and Stephanie Hayden each tallied three hits in the contest, as Hayden’s double was the only extra-base hit for BVU in the contest.  Pilcher also added a hit and drove in a team-high three runs.

Senior Jami Webster got the start and picked up her second win of the year, going 4.2 innings and allowing five runs on seven hits, while striking out three.  Chancey Wilcke came on in relief and picked up the save, working the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit en route to her first save of the year.

Buena Vista runs its overall record to 9-5 and will look to extend its win streak to five when it plays a non-conference doubleheader at St. Catherine’s on Monday evening beginning at 4:00pm.
