Beaver Baseball Picked to Finish First in IIAC

The Buena Vista baseball team received four of a possible seven first-place votes and finished with 52 overall points to edge Wartburg College as the favorite to win the 2014 IIAC regular season title according to the preseason coaches poll released by the league office.

The Knights, last year's regular season and tournament champion, tallied a pair of first-place votes and finished with 51 points while Coe College, last year's regular season and tournament runner-up, earned one first-place vote and finished third in the poll with 45 points.  Loras College received the final first-place vote and tied for fifth with Central College at 30 points.

It's the fifth straight year that BVU has been picked as one of the top two teams in the preseason coaches poll and the third time it was picked as the league favorite (2011 and 2012).

With 17 letterwinners back from last year's team that placed third, head coach Steve Eddie and his squad look to make another deep postseason run.  But he knows the road through the league this season will not be easy.

"The Iowa Conference should be a league of parity," says Eddie.  "I would predict the last conference weekend will determine who makes the tournament, and a majority of the seeds won't be known until the last out is retired. All eight teams will have a chance to finish anywhere in the league standings.  It should be an amazing year."

The Beavers finished the non-conference portion of their schedule with a record of 11-1, the team's best start since 2009. The team also has earned votes in the and ABCA national polls.
