“...I have been given the freedom to decide”

Andrew Gisch, Class of 2014

Andrew Gisch

Hometown: Laurens, Iowa
Major: Chemistry
Research title: “Exploring the 'Kjeldahl Method' of Protein Analysis”

“BVU has given me the professional experiences I need to be a confident, knowledgeable teacher in the science field. During my research, I have been given the freedom to decide which direction I would like to go.  This has sharpened my critical thinking and is preparing me to problem-solve in the high school chemistry classroom. Dr. Ehler has become a lifelong friend, mentor, and supporter of my choice to follow in his footsteps and teach chemistry.”

“...there is no substitute for the experience that can be gained”

Zane Gernhart, Class of 2010

Zane Gernhart

Hometown: Fort Dodge, Iowa
Major: Chemistry
Research title: “Study of Octadcanethiol Self Assembled Monolayers on Gallium Arsenide”

“My research experience at BVU was the most important factor in my decision to become a research scientist. While learning about the experiments of other scientists in the classroom is important, there is no substitute for the experience that can be gained by students carrying out their own research. The research project I was a part of at BVU gave me the opportunity to design, implement, and analyze scientific experiments. I was also given many opportunities to present the results of my research to other scientists at local and regional scientific conferences. All of these experiences helped tremendously in my training as a scientist and in my transition to graduate school.”
