Political Science

Even though members of a society hold different opinions and values, they must agree on certain rules and procedures in order to get things accomplished. In a nation, the government is the ultimate body that sets the framework for how we live together, from national environmental policy to economic regulations that affect the pizza place down the street. No matter if your personal politics skew liberal or conservative, a political science degree can help you learn how to better participate in and analyze the important decisions affecting your nation and community.

As a political science major, you will study theories of government and discuss their implications for current events. In your first years, you’ll focus on studying key actors, institutions and ideologies, examining them in comparative historical and global contexts. Through internship opportunities, you’ll participate in the political process in action. Through research, you’ll learn to evaluate different measures of the will of the people.  In your final years in the program, you will apply the background you’ve built to make your own independent contributions to politics and the study thereof.
