A former middle school and high school English language arts teacher, Dr. Friesen is an engaged member of the National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE), Iowa representative with the ALAN Assembly on Literature for Adolescents, serves on the Iowa Department of Education's Literacy Leadership Team and currently serves as the collegiate liaison for the Iowa Council for Teachers of English (ICTE). Research interests include the academic acculturation of newcomer teens in Iowa schools, and literacy initiatives for at risk and reluctant teen readers.
