OCOS Reception

Check out our stories! Two Buena Vista University courses will be hosting a special reception Wednesday, May 22nd to celebrate the community’s stories uncovered by BVU students and Storm Lake sixth graders through the Our Culture: Our Stories projects. The gallery includes videos and pictures about diversity, social justice, and the BVU community, showing off all of the great work that has been done by these students this semester. The reception is from 6-8 p.m. in the BVU Art Gallery in the Social Science and Art Hall on campus. Refreshments will also be provided. The display opens on Monday, May 20th and will continue to be open until Saturday, May 25th.

Final Exams

Final exams for the Spring 2013 semester take place this week on our Storm Lake campus.

Campus Wide Book Drive

A book is worth a thousand worlds. Please contribute to the drive this year all through finals week if you have either unused or used books. There will be boxes for deposit at the Information Desk and in the Campus Store. The books are sold online with proceeds going to a local charity or nonprofit. Choir Concert in the Park

Everyone is invited to the BVU Choir's Finale Concert in the Park, Sunday, May 19 at 3 p.m.. Concert will be held in the Storm Lake Bandshell at Sunset Park. The Choir will perform a program of Broadway, Pop and American choral selections. Student Directors for the event are Jacob Pedersen, junior music education major from Manson, Kayla Shadlow, junior music education major from Storm Lake, and Sheldon Paramore, graduating senior in Communications from Youngstown, Ohio. There is no charge for the concert. The public is encouraged to attend. Please bring your own lawn chairs or blankets for seating and a reception will follow the concert.

Intramural Corec Sand Volleyball Tournament

Intramural Sand Volleyball is a corec tournament for students, faculty and staff of BVU. All games are played on the sand volleyball court north of the suites. Teams will play 6v6, with a minimum of 2 males and 2 females playing. This double-elimination tournament will begin at 4:00pm. All participants are required to register online at www.imleagues.com by midnight on Thursday, May 16.

Boat Float Challenge

BVU's Office of Student Affairs and the Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC) host the fifth "Beavers' Annual Great Boat Float Challenge" at the Recreation Services House. The event was rescheduled after the original date was rained out.

Registration and grilling will begin at 4:45 p.m., followed by the SCJ pie throwing fundraiser at 5 p.m. The races will begin at 5:15pm. Please join us for an afternoon of creativity and competition!

TLTC Semester End Celebration!

Scholarly ACES Event: Spring Band Concert

The BVU band will present their annual concert. A variety of works will be performed from the concert band literature. Featured soloist for this concert is Lance LeDuc. Mr. LeDuc, trombonist with the Boston Brass, will perform several pieces with the BVU Concert Band.

ACES Scholarly Event: Legal Eagles

This is a discussion of rules and regulations on obscenity, involving public speaking, radio and film. We will be screening an original documentary that examines the historical case of censorship as it pertains to the concept of obscenity.

SDP Cultural Fashion Show

Tomorrow Students of Diverse Population, also known as SDP, will be putting on a cultural fashion show! Come and support the models and find different ways people around the world. We will be in the lobby of SSA.

American Heritage Lecture Series Informational Meeting

The American Heritage Lecture Series at BVU offers students the rare chance to appear on stage with world leaders and to ask them questions. You can take advantage of this opportunity by applying to be a student panelist for the AHLS event on Saturday, October 12, 2013, when Dr. Condoleezza Rice, the former U.S. Secretary of State, will be our 21st William W. Storytelling with Walt Disney Cruise and Travel Meeting

Tuesday, May 7 @ 7:00pm in Forum Room 1 Spend your interim on a cruise: Storytelling with Walt Disney starts at Disneyland in Anaheim, California and then moves across the country to Orlando, Florida, home of the Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney World. You will experience a day in Hollywood, go backstage at Disney and take a Disney Cruise around the Caribbean with a Disney Historian. ACES Scholarly Event: Performing Culture: Hispanic Cuentos on Stage

As a class project, student groups have adapted hispanic folktales to the stage in short skits in order to bring the culture to life. We will present the skits in Spanish with certain tools to help those who don't speak to understand the story. This will give insights into the different and similar values and beginnings that we share with our American neighbors, as well as how the students can engage other cultures in meaningful ways.

JV Baseball vs. Iowa Central CC

Come out and help cheer on the Beaver JV baseball team as it wraps up its season with a one nine-inning game against Iowa Central CC. This is a game that was added to the schedule at the end of last week.

WANTED: Full-time, On-campus students from BVU ages 18-22!

Stacy Gerling is looking for voluntary research participants who are full time students to participate in a research study about Buena Vista University student views on elective abortion. The research will help to get an understanding of college students views on elective abortion and help future researchers understand college student views. This research study will result in a report for the Social Work Class Research I. The research includes a thirty minute interview with a questionnaire. ACES Scholarly Event: VANG: A Drama about Recent Immigration Farmers

Poet Laureate of Iowa, Mary Swander, Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Dennis Chamberlin, and ACT Kennedy Center award-winner Matt Foss collaborate to create a drama called Vang (meaning "garden" or "farm" in Hmong). Swander and Chamberlin document recent Iowa immigrant farmers, then Swander wind their words together to form a verbatim play that captures the immigrants' journeys to the States. Hmong, Mexican, Sudanese, and Dutch immigrants all speak of their struggles, survival skills, and their intense desire to return to the land. Chamberlin took stunning photos of the immigrants in their greenhouses, farms, and dairy barns. Foss added his theatrical brilliance to the production, bringing Vang to life on the stage.

Men's Alumni Soccer Reunion

The BVU alumni men's soccer game will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at 3 p.m. on Peterson Field in the J. Leslie Rollins Stadium. Senior Shows

From April 30 to May 16 works by Tara Lehner, Sonia Mugabo, and Keyla Sosa will be on display in the BVU Art Gallery, located in the Social Sciences and Art building. All three are seniors in the Graphic Design and Visual Communication major, and works shown are their senior capstone projects. There will be an artists reception on Saturday, May 4th from 2-4 pm - all are welcome to attend. Lehner's show is titled Plant a New Seed, and contains both poster designs as well as a multi-media work. Mugabo's show is titled Afrikana Exquisitness, and will include designs for a magazine cover and several banners. Sosa's show, titled Saving the Animals, includes three children's books that Keyla wrote and illustrated. The stories relate to why we should work to maintain the natural environment. Copies of these books will also be available for purchase.

2013 BVU Vocal Jazz Show

BVU Vocal Jazz Show The BVU Vocal Jazz Ensemble will present their annual Jazz Show, Thursday, May 2nd at 7:30 PM in Anderson Auditorium. MC’s for this year’s Jazz Show are Hannah Anderson from Boone, IA and Taylor Burgraff from Fairmont, MN. The MC’s add their own special comic treatment of the introductions and involve the audience for the show. This year Jacob Pedersen of Manson, IA as the student director has selected and rehearsed the Show Choir selections which include Waka, Waka and Good Time. Dr. Paula Keeler prepared the students for the Jazz Choir selections including Up the Ladder to the Roof and Nice and Easy. Kylie Peterson, presently student teaching in Spencer, IA choreographed the Jazz opening selection. Additional choreographers for the show are Erin Nelson, from Sioux City East High School and Nicholas Andersen, choral director at Lawton-Bronson High School. Eight vocal students will be presenting solos offered throughout the production including freshmen Izaak Plunkett from Spirit Lake, Dennis Arteaga from Oelwein and Nicole Boysen from Danbury. The Vocal Jazz Show is an ACES event and no fee is charged at the door. The public is invited and the show promises a good time!

What happens if you have sex and it turns out that your partner didn't want to do it? There was once a time when if a person said no, they really meant yes.
