Buena Vista University is planning events on campus as part of the city-wide Extreme Winter Festival to be held Feb. 10-12, 2012.

BVU sponsored its own winter celebration on campus in 2010, and last year partnered with Storm Lake United — the city’s chamber, tourism and area development organization — which also held a winter festival, to allow for more effective use of volunteers and resources and serve the entire community. This year, the Festival has been expanded to involve a variety of local Storm Lake residents and organizations.

According to Storm Lake United, events planned this year include a broomball tournament, a golf tournament and disc golf on the lake, a chili cook-off, snowmobile races, an extreme bike ride, a polar plunge, snowshoe races, cross country skiing, ice hockey tournament, and snow sculpture contest. BVU will also be holding an indoor triathlon at the Lamberti Recreation Center and Finkbine Natatorium.

BVU staff helping plan and coordinate the events on campus are Joe Pearson, director of intramurals, recreation and Outdoor Adventure Den, and Mark Kirkholm, interim associate dean of students and director of campus security. Dr. Matt Hanson, assistant professor of exercise science and clinical coordinator of human performance, who competed in the world Ironman event in October in Hawaii, is working with his students to conduct the triathlon.  BVU students and staff are also helping with activities.
