Tips to reduce your risk of getting influenza: Get a flu shot annually, avoid close contact with people who are sick, stay home or in your room when you are sick, wash hands often to protect yourself from getting germs, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth which can be contaminated with germs. For general good health it is always recommended to eat right, sleep at least 8 hours each night, drink plenty of water, and keep stress to a minimum (remember the massage chair available for use in our office). If you become sick, Health Services has Flu Kits available for you in their office. You may contact them by phone, e-mail or stopping by their office located in the lower-level of the Fieldhouse L-25. Flu season will probably continue for several weeks. While the flu vaccine may not work as well as usual against some H3N2 viruses, vaccination can still protect some people and reduce hospitalization and deaths, and will protect against other flu viruses. Influenza antiviral drugs can treat flu illness if started early. If you exhibit influenza like illness (ILI) which includes fever (usually high) severe headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough/chest discomfort, sore throat, and/or muscle aches you may have an influenza virus that infects the respiratory tract. You should seek the advice of a healthcare provider (BVU Health Services) if you have these symptoms. Prevention includes: avoiding close contact with those that are sick, staying home when sick, washing your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth which can be contaminated with germs, and cough or sneeze into your elbow or a kleenex. The seasonal flu vaccine is still available in Health Services free to students/faculty/staff. It is also available for dependents over the age of 18 for nominal fee of $20. It is important to remember that flu viruses are thought to spread mainly from person to person through droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk. Flu viruses also may spread when people touch something with flu virus on it and then touch their mouth, eyes, or nose. Many other viruses spread these ways too. People infected with flu may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5-7 days after becoming sick. That means you may be able to spread the flu to someone else before you know you are sick as well as while you are sick. Young children, those who are severely ill, and those who have severely weakened immune systems may be able to infect others for longer than 5-7 days. To prevent the flu from spreading follow these Everyday Prevention Actions if you are sick! • Try to avoid close contact with sick people. • If you get sick with flu-like illness, Centers for Disease Control recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. The fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine. • While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them. • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu. BVU Health Services advises that you report flu-like illness and utilize their services when you are sick. Please visit their office in the lower-level of the Siebens Fieldhouse (L-25), call their office (712-749-1238) or the-mail healthservices@bvu.edu office hours 8 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.
