Dear Graduating Seniors, Parents, Friends, Buena Vista University Faculty, Staff, Administration and Trustees:
It is with great pleasure that Buena Vista University will be hosting the Baccalaureate Service in honor of the Class of 2013. The service will be held on May 25 at 10:30 a.m. in Schaller Memorial Chapel. This program will be a special blessing and sending service compiled by members of the Class of 2013, along with the BVU community members. We would be honored by your attendance, for each of you has played an important role in the success and achievements of our new graduates. Please join us in celebrating the great accomplishment with these students and in asking God’s blessings upon their lives and their collective journey forward.
The Baccalaureate Service derives from the medieval European custom of presenting the candidates for the degree of Bachelor (bacca) with laurels (lauri) through a service of worship in celebration of and thanksgiving for the lives dedicated to learning and wisdom. Ritually marking the close of the undergraduate years, the Baccalaureate provides an occasion to remember that we do not belong to ourselves and that our true vocations or deepest callings, are discovered only by committing ourselves to the service of the common good. In gratitude and reverence for those sacred vocations, as numerous and as diverse in their particular expressions as the members of this Class of 2013, we gather at Baccalaureate to remember, to rejoice and to give thanks.
The order of worship for this year’s Baccalaureate Service will be transformed this year with the inclusion of contemporary music, use of our 2013 graduates and blessings from BVU community. We pray that these changes will enhance the tradition of this celebration and offer a rich time for BVU to celebrate together. We hope to see you there.
