The BVU Concert Band under the direction of Assistant Professor of Music Jerry Bertrand will present its annual Holiday concert on Sunday, Dec 9 at 3:00 PM in Schaller Memorial Chapel.
The program will open with a lively galloping overture written by Franz von Suppe in 1866 called “The Light Calvary Overture”. The featured work on the concert will be a performance of “Symphony No. 1 – New Day Rising” by Steven Reineke. The symphony describes in music the day the city of San Francisco was destroyed by an earthquake and fire in 1906. Composer Steven Reineke, associate conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, was commissioned by the Contra Costa Wind Symphony of Walnut Creek, CA to write a work to be performed on the centennial date of the San Francisco disaster.
Contributing to the Spirit of the Holiday the BVU Concert Band will perform “Polish Christmas Music” by Johan de Meij. This work was commissioned by The American School of the Hague for the 20th Annual International Honor Band and Choir Festival 1995. The program concludes with a medley of traditional carols called “A Festive Christmas by Kenny Bierschenk.
This Holiday concert is free and open to the public.
